Frequently asked questions
Screen Printing (also known as serigraphy and serigraph printing) is the process that involves pressing ink (or dye) down through a stenciled mesh design on a flat surface where your substrate is with a squeegee.
The squeegee moves across the screen to fill the open mesh stencil with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed.
It is a popular “old school style” technique used in various different industries. The process is sometimes called ‘silk screening’ or ‘silk screen printing’ and while the actual printing process is always fairly similar, the way the stencil is created can vary, depending on the materials used.
While embroidery has many advantages (you can find them under the “What Is Embroidery” FAW), such as its durability and classic look, there are also situations where screen printing may be a better choice.
One of the key advantages of screen printing is its versatility. Screen printing can be used on a wide range of materials, including cotton, polyester, and other fabrics, as well as items such as ceramics, metal, and plastic. This makes it a great choice for a wide variety of projects, from t-shirts and hats to promotional items and gifts.
Screen printing is also more cost-effective than embroidery for large orders, as the setup process is quicker and less labor-intensive. Additionally, screen printing can produce bold, bright colors that stand out well on light or dark backgrounds, making it a great choice for designs that require high-contrast, eye-catching visuals.
Another advantage of screen printing is that it is well suited for designs that require fine details and precise line work. Screen printing can produce clean, crisp lines and accurate reproductions of complex designs, whereas embroidery can sometimes result in a more textured and uneven look, especially with smaller, detailed designs.
In conclusion, while embroidery has its own unique advantages, screen printing can be the better choice in certain situations, such as when cost-effectiveness and versatility are key concerns, or when the design requires bold, eye-catching graphics and precise details.
Embroidery is a decorative needlework technique in which designs are created by stitching thread onto fabric using a needle. It is often used to embellish clothing, linens, and other textiles. The thread is typically made from cotton, silk, or rayon, and comes in a variety of colors.
Embroidery can be done by hand using a needle and thread, or it can be produced using a specialized embroidery machine. In machine embroidery, the design is programmed into the machine and the needle and thread are guided by the machine to stitch the design onto the fabric.
Embroidery can be used to create a wide range of designs, including logos, monograms, decorative patterns, and more. It is often used to personalize clothing and other items, such as towels, bags, and hats. Embroidery can also be used to repair or reinforce fabric in areas that have become worn or damaged.
Embroidery is considered a traditional art form and has a long history, with roots in many different cultures and civilizations. It is still widely used today in both hand-stitching and machine-stitching techniques and continues to be a popular way to add a touch of elegance and personalization to a wide range of textiles.
Embroidery and screen printing are both popular methods for decorating textiles, but they have different lifespan expectations.
Embroidery typically lasts longer than screen printing due to the nature of the stitching process. The thread used in embroidery is typically stitched into the fabric and creates a permanent bond, making it more durable and resistant to fading and wear over time. This means that well-made embroidery can last for many years, even with frequent washing and use.
Screen printing, on the other hand, involves applying ink onto the surface of the fabric, rather than stitching into it. The ink is then cured, or heat-set, to help it bond with the fabric. While screen printing can be durable, it is more susceptible to fading and wear over time, especially with frequent washing. Screen printing can last for several years, but it may start to fade or crack after a certain amount of time, depending on the quality of the ink and the fabric it is printed on.
Overall, embroidery is considered a more long-lasting and durable method of decoration compared to screen printing. However, both techniques can be used to achieve beautiful and long-lasting results, and the best choice for a particular project will depend on factors such as the design, the intended use, and the desired look and feel of the final product.
Screen printing can be done on a variety of materials, including:
Fabrics: Cotton, polyester, canvas, and blends of these materials are common choices for screen printing on clothing and textiles.
Papers: Screen printing is often used to produce posters, cards, and other paper products.
Ceramics: Screen printing can be used to print designs onto ceramic objects, such as mugs, plates, and tiles.
Metals: Screen printing can be used to print designs onto metal items, such as keychains, bottle openers, and jewelry.
Plastics: Screen printing can be used to print designs onto plastic items, such as phone cases, water bottles, and other promotional items.
Wood: Screen printing can be used to print designs onto wooden objects, such as signs, plaques, and coasters.
Glass: Screen printing can be used to print designs onto glass items, such as wine glasses, mirrors, and picture frames.
Other materials: Screen printing can also be used on a variety of other materials, including fabric, leather, vinyl, and more.
The type of material you choose will depend on factors such as the desired look and feel of the final product, the intended use, and the specific requirements of the design. It’s important to consider the properties of each material and to choose the one that is best suited for your project.
The time it takes to complete the screen printing process will depend on several factors, including the size of the order, the complexity of the design, and the type of material being printed on. In general, screen printing can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to complete.
For smaller orders, the screen printing process can be completed in just a few day or so, depending on the size and complexity of the design. For larger orders, the process may take several days to a week, as each item must be carefully prepared and printed individually.
Additionally, the preparation process, such as creating the screens, mixing the inks, and setting up the press, can also impact the overall time it takes to complete the screen printing process.

To prepare your design for screen printing, you should take the following steps:
Choose the right file format: Screen printing requires high-resolution artwork, so it’s best to provide your design in a vector file format such as AI, EPS, or PDF. Bitmap files such as JPG or PNG may also be accepted, but the quality of the print may be affected. Our best suggestion is to use PNG files as those are the most widely known files out there.
Check the color count: Screen printing typically uses a limited number of inks, so it’s important to keep the number of colors in your design to a minimum. If your design has more than 6 colors, it may be necessary to simplify it or convert it to a halftone image.
Verify the size and placement: Make sure that your design is the correct size and is placed in the desired location on the garment. The screen printing company will typically provide guidelines for the print area, and it’s important to follow these to ensure that your design will print correctly.
Provide pantone colors: If your design includes specific pantone colors, it’s important to provide this information to the screen printing company. This will help to ensure that the final print matches your desired color scheme.
By following these steps, you can help to ensure that your design is prepared correctly for screen printing and that the final product will meet your expectations. If you have any questions or concerns, it’s always a good idea to communicate directly with your screen printing company to ensure that your design is prepared correctly.
If you need us to match specific colors that are in your design we can do that. In doing so, this will cause a small additional fee. This is simply because our in house design team needs to go in and do that manually. Once we match the specific color we will also send you the specific code so that you have it available to you for future references.
